5 things that make you a great neighbor

They say you can't pick your neighbors, but most people want to feel connected to their neighbors and be a part of living in a friendly neighborhood or area. Here are some things you can do that score high marks in the eyes of your neighbor.

1. Get To Know Your Neighbors

It's easy enough to be a good neighbor—you just need to take the time to get to know your fellow neighbors. Wave to them when you see them outside or invite them over for a cup of coffee. You might be surprised at how much you have in common. And once you've developed a relationship, you can rely on one another for help when you need it. Your neighbors are a valuable resource, so take the time to get to know them.

2. Keep Your Property Well-Maintained

Make sure your property is well-maintained. That means keeping the lawn mowed, the bushes trimmed, and the flowers maintained. It also means taking care of your home's exterior—painting it when it needs it, fixing any broken windows, screens, shingles, and so on. Taking pride in your home is noted and appreciated by your fellow neighbors.

3. Be Considerate of Your Neighbors' Place

Respect the property of your neighbors. Don't park where you are blocking their mailbox or driveway. Reduce the volume of your noise, especially late at night. Give them a heads up if you are having several people over to your home and invite them if appropriate for the occasion.

4. Take Responsibility For Your Pets

If you're a pet owner, it's important to take responsibility for your furry friend. This means keeping dogs on a leash when you're out for a walk and picking up after them when they do their business. It also means keeping pets from wandering into your neighbor's yard and not allowing them to bark or meow excessively.

5. Respect Your Neighbors' Privacy

Always respect your neighbors' privacy. Most people prefer a call or text before getting company. They might not be in the mood to socialize or may be busy and not have time to engage with you. Find out their preferences so that you know.
