5 tips to deter mail & package theft from your home

The convenience of shopping online has made it a norm for most households. That means more packages arriving at our homes. You may worry about your packages being stolen from your doorstep. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to deter thieves from targeting your mail and packages.

1. Install Security Cameras

One way to deter mail and package theft from your home is to install security cameras. If a thief sees that your home is equipped with security cameras, they're likely to move on to an easier target. Placing a sign that says "This property is under video surveillance" can help you capture someone looking for those cameras (it's a natural reaction) even if they do move on.

2. Utilize Delivery Notifications

When you're expecting a package, it's always a good idea to sign up to get notifications so you know when your package will arrive. Some delivery companies offer a service where they'll text or email you a picture of the delivery being made so that you know exactly when it arrived. Another way to prevent mail and package theft is to have your packages delivered to your office if this is a viable option for you.

3. Network with Neighbors

Get to know your neighbors. This is an easy way to build a community that's looking out for each other. If you see someone acting suspicious in your neighborhood or if you do have something happen at your home, don't hesitate to let people know so they can be on the lookout.

4. Add a Smart Doorbell

A great way to deter mail and package theft is to install a smart doorbell. When someone rings your doorbell, a notification will pop up on your phone so you can see who's there and whether or not you want to answer the door. If you're not at home, or if you're just not interested in talking to the person at your door, you can always ignore the notification. But the best part is that you can also talk to the person at your door through your phone, even if you're miles away. So not only will a smart doorbell help you catch any potential thieves, but it'll also give you peace of mind knowing that you can always communicate with the people at your front door, whether you are at home or not.

5. Avoid Putting Checks in a Mailbox

In addition to package theft, mail theft is something you'll want to prevent too. Thieves are looking for flags up in a neighborhood to snag envelopes that may have checks (or gift cards) in them. These checks are then modified by a "check washing" process so that a new amount and recipient can be added. The revised check is easily cashed by someone with fake credentials that match the new name on the front of the check. Use secure online payment portals for paying your bills as much as you can. Avoid sending checks or gift cards in the mail or drop them off at the post office to minimize the risk of theft. You can also sign up for USPS Informed Delivery so that you receive a daily email giving you a better idea of what to expect in your mailbox each day.
