5 tips to help make your home more secure

Everyone wants to keep their belongings and loved ones safe. Tightening your home security can reduce the chances of you becoming a victim of a crime as it deters criminals from targeting your home. Although some home security features can cost a lot, there are simple ways to enhance your security without making any elaborate upgrades.

1. Your key's hiding place isn't that unique — get rid of it

If you're hiding a house key behind a potted plant, under a mat, or on a mailbox, you may want to reconsider this. This gives criminals easy access to your home and contrary to what you may believe, the secret hiding place you leave your key in isn't that secret. Rather leave your key with a trustworthy neighbor or make copies of it for other members of your family. You may decide to ditch the key altogether for a digital access option.

2. Make sure your home is well-lit inside and outside

A well-lit home is a great deterrent for people who may have ill intent. This is because many criminals are likely to attempt to trespass your home at night because they won't be seen. Invest in great lighting with infrared motion sensors and make sure you replace any old lightbulbs. Lights with timers make it easier for you to hide when you are away too.

3. Install a security system

A good security system will help keep your home secure whether you're present or not. The great thing about modern security systems is they allow you to keep an eye on your home from a remote location. There are also tons to choose from that fit varying budgets and security needs.

4. Make sure your Wi-Fi network is secure

When you think of beefing up your home security, does your Wi-Fi come to mind? Many security systems and home devices are connected to personal Wi-Fi networks, which is why it's important to make sure it's as secure as possible. Wi-Fi networks that are open make it easy for people to hack security systems and steal your personal data, making it easier to enter your home.

Home security has evolved beyond just the physical — it's also about the intangible assets you have online. Keep your social pages private and don't promote when you'll be gone.

5. Don't advertise what you have

Leaving the box from your new flat screen TV or computer in front of your house on trash day may seem innocent enough but it could entice a criminal to pick your home as their target. Likewise, be sure to keep your garage closed and have window coverings so that your expensive items aren't visible to someone going by your home
