Tips for organizing your garage

The garage is one of those spots where things tend to be tossed in when there doesn't seem to be a spot for it anywhere else. It's also the place where it's easy to forget exactly what is out there at any given time. Keeping your garage organized ensures ample space for the big things (like vehicles) that need to be stored there. Keeping it tidy also helps you find the things you need when you need them. Ever buy an item and then you later realized that you had one of those in your garage? Below are some tips to help you get this space cleaned up.

Do a Garage Audit

Before you can start organizing your garage, you need to do a little inventory check. Take a look at everything that's in there and ask yourself these questions:

 -Do I want this?

-When was the last time I used this and when am I likely to need it again (if ever)?

-Is this broken or damaged? If so, is it worth repairing?

Garage space is precious, so you don't want to waste it on things you really don't need.

Sort and Purge

Now it's time to purge. Go through everything in your garage and get rid of anything you don't need. This is the hard part, but it's so worth it in the end. It's helpful to divide everything into categories: tools, sports equipment, holiday decorations, etc. Once you've sorted everything, it's time to get rid of the stuff you don't use. Be honest here. If you haven't used it in over a year, chances are you're never going to use it again. And don't forget about the sentimental items. It's tough to let go of things that have been in your family for generations, but if it's just taking up space in your garage and it's not likely to be passed on, it may be time to say goodbye. Be sure to check the value on any collectibles before getting rid of them.

Create Garage Zones for items

If you're serious about organizing your garage, one of the best things you can do is to create zones. These are designated areas where you can store similar items such as tools and seasonal supplies. When it comes to setting up zones, there are a couple things to keep in mind. First, make sure you have enough storage space for all your supplies. Second, you'll want to organize your items in such a way that the things you use often are easy to access and return to their designated place.

Use Overhead Space Wisely

You can use your overhead space to store things like ladders, brooms, and other long-handled tools. This way, they're up and out of the way, and you can easily grab them when you need them. Another option is to install some shelves or racks near the ceiling. This is great for storing boxes of holiday decorations, sports gear, or anything else that takes up a lot of space and isn't used on a regular basis. Just be sure to measure beforehand to make sure everything will fit and allows ample clearance for vehicles!

Install Slat Walls

You may think about adding some slat walls in your garage. Slat walls are really helpful for organizing your garage because they provide a lot of flexibility. You can attach shelves, hooks, and other storage units to them, which means you can create a system that works for you and your specific needs. They're also easy to install. If you're looking for a way to get your garage organized, slat walls are definitely worth considering.

It can be tough to know where to start when it comes to organizing your garage. By following these simple tips, you can get your garage in good shape in no time.
