Considering finishing your basement? Here are some things to consider

Have you been thinking about finishing your basement and you're not sure where to start? Below are some of the basics of finishing a basement and some of the things you need to consider before getting started.

Permits & Codes

Before investing any time or money into your project, you'll want to make sure you know what permits and inspections will be needed prior to starting your project. You also want to make sure your plans meet all code requirements.

Cost

One of the biggest expenses will be the labor costs. If you're doing the work yourself, it will definitely take longer, and if you're hiring a contractor, it will cost more. However, a well-done basement renovation can add value to your home in addition to providing you more living space to enjoy now.

Drainage Requirements

When you're finishing your basement, it's important to think about the drainage requirements. You don't want water pooling in your basement because that will lead to water damage and all sorts of other problems. You should also install a sump pump (if you don't already have one) and make sure that the drainage system is working properly.

Installing Windows

If you're thinking of installing windows in your basement, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. For starters, make sure the windows are high enough off the ground so that water can't seep in. You also want to choose a style that's going to let in as much natural light as possible. If you're not sure what type of window to get, talk to your contractor. They'll be able to recommend a style that's ideal for your basement and fits within your budget.

Light Sources

When choosing your lighting, you want to make sure there's enough light for people to move around safely and enjoy the space, but you also don't want it to be too bright. There are a few different ways to achieve this effect. You could install a few track lights, or use recessed lighting that is installed in the ceiling. Don't forget about the importance of accent lighting to add style to your space.

Flooring Options

When it comes to choosing a new floor, you will want to make sure that it's made of a water-resistant material. Laminate and tile are popular options. If you're looking for something a little more durable, you might want to consider vinyl or coated concrete floors. Vinyl is a great choice for basement flooring because it's waterproof and easy to clean. And if you go with coated concrete, you'll get a floor that's resistant to moisture and easy to maintain.

Finishing your basement can be a great way to add some extra living space and value to your home. Just be sure to think about all of the potential costs and challenges involved and make a plan before you get started.
