5 common home issues that can be costly if not addressed

Maintaining a comfortable and functional home can seem like a daunting task sometimes. Common household issues can arise unexpectedly and, if left unaddressed, can lead to more significant problems down the line. Below are some common household issues, tips for how to address them, and the potential consequences of neglecting them.

1. Leaking Toilet:

This may seem like a minor issue since usually, the toilet will still function even if it's leaking. However, if ignored, you could be shocked by the increase in your utility bill or see structural damage or mold over time.

A lot of times, it's simply a matter of replacing worn-out parts. Seek the help of a plumber if you can't address the problem on your own.

2. Gaps in Doors and/or Windows:

The gaps in your doors and windows may be hard to detect but they will lead to drafts, high energy bills, allergens, and pests.

This issue may only require some weatherstripping or caulking to seal the gaps. Replacing damaged seals and thresholds may help too. If you have old doors and windows, you may consider an upgrade to more energy efficient options.

3. Clogged Gutters or a Sagging Roof:

These exterior issues are sometimes hard to identify before they've become real issues so it's important to have these inspected on a regular basis. Not doing so can lead to water damage, mold, and structural damage. Gutters and downspouts should be cleaned at least once on an annual basis. Gutter guards can help minimize the maintenance but be sure to weigh the upfront costs and cons before having these installed. A sagging roof can be due to water damage, age, or improper installation. Having your roof inspected annually (especially if it was installed 15 or more years ago) can prevent more costly repairs.

4. Critters:

From tiny ants to a large possum and everything in between, critters can wreak havoc on your home and sometimes even your health.

Identifying where the uninvited guests are coming from is key to solving the problem. While some may be able to be addressed with repellant sprays (both natural and store bought solutions), you may need the help of an exterminator to get rid of the problem.

5. Mold:

Mold develops in damp and humid areas in your home and can cause both health issues and property damage. A lot of times one will know they have it due to the visible black spots that signify mold or the musty smell. It's not always obvious though. Testing using an at home kit or by hiring a professional can confirm the issue.

Small areas of mold may be able to be removed with simple household items such as water and dish detergent, vinegar or bleach. Be sure to protect yourself with gloves and a mask to minimize your exposure. For a major mold problem, it's best to seek a professional. Either way, be sure to address the issue that caused the mold.
